21 November 2016: World Fisheries Day

On World Fisheries Day 2016, FAO and the Vatican shine a spotlight on “modern-day slavery” on the high seas. The fisheries sector is confronted with numerous human rights issues, such as pirate fishing, conflict over fishing grounds, child and forced labor, and human trafficking. All this is part of the concept of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

At the event held today at FAO headquarters (Rome, Italy), countries, international organizations, fishermen’s organizations and the fishing industry will be urged to work together to promote human rights and ensure decent work in fisheries.
