China and the effects of subsidies on fisheries

China, the world’s largest exporter of fishery products, with more than 1.35 billion people and a per capita consumption of almost 38 kilos per year of fish, has decided to increase this supremacy through subsidies and tax exemptions, with annual injections of 5,232 million Euros to fish more and in more fishing grounds.

The Asian expansion “under non-competitive conditions” could expel the Spanish fishing sector from some priority markets, particularly West Africa. The European Commission and the World Trade Organization are collaborating on subsidies in fisheries and their effects.
