Entry into force of the Polar Code

In view of the need to respond to the growing polar shipping, the Polar Code, which is mandatory for ships operating in Arctic and Antarctic waters, has entered into force on 1 January 2017. This legal instrument is a great achievement for the International Maritime Organization, in line with its ongoing work to promote safe and sustainable shipping in all regions of the world.

Due to the particular weather conditions in the area, the Polar Code sets out mandatory standards covering the full range of design, construction, equipment, operation, training and environmental protection of the issues that apply to ships navigating in waters surrounding the two poles.
