EU fishing opportunities for 2017

After 16 hours of negotiations in the Council of Ministers of Fisheries of the European Union on the distribution of fishing possibilities for 2017, the reports and socioeconomic studies presented by the Spanish Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Ms. Isabel García Tejerina, seem to have had an effect. Thus, Spain will be able to fish 41,000 more tons in 2017.

Despite this result, there have been significant reductions of megrim in the north and south, with downward adjustments of 25% and 15%, respectively; and in zone VIIIc, the 23% decrease in horse mackerel and the TAC O for Norway lobster. Also, shipowners lament the European Union’s rush to achieve the maximum sustainable yield in full in 2017.
