FAO Voluntary Guidelines on the Marking of Fishing Gear

FAO has agreed on voluntary guidelines on the marking of fishing gear that it intends to approve next July 2018 in the FAO Committee on Fisheries.

In this regard, the FAO has recalled that gear such as fishing nets become part of the plastic waste that is thrown into the oceans when they are abandoned, lost or discarded at sea, which causes harmful effects on the environment, fish stocks and the safety of navigation.

Therefore, the fact of marking the fishing gear allows to trace them and identify their owners and, in this way, avoid marine pollution as well as possible illegalities.
