The EU promotes an agreement with the WTO to reduce subsidies in the fisheries sector

The EU Commissioners for Trade, Cecilia Malmström, and for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, have announced that they will begin discussions with the World Trade Organization (WTO) to achieve an international and multilateral agreement on subsidies in the fisheries sector.

The aim is to reduce subsidies to increase the capacity of fleets and those intended to fishermen fishing illegally. The agreement will be important to safeguard the world’s fisheries sustainably and to diminish overfishing. However, these objectives should not contradict the need for growth of developing countries.
