The impact of the landing obligation on seabirds

The prohibition of discards in fishing has negative consequences on seabirds that are incidental catch of longline vessels. According to Professor Jacob González-Solís (University of Barcelona), “in the absence of trawlers, seabirds choose to feed on the baits of longline vessels, increasing their risk of being caught in the fish hooks and drown.”

In order to avoid such a situation, it is essential to apply appropriate corrective measures to the longline fleet, which prevent the birds from catching and dying on the hooks.
